What I Would Install in My Own Home as an Electrician

There’s something incredibly satisfying about moving into a new home—not just for the fresh start, but for the opportunity to build on a strong foundation. The builders have done a great job creating a well-designed and functional space, but as a master electrician, I see even more possibilities. Having the knowledge and skill to enhance my home’s electrical system gives me the freedom to customize it in ways that improve efficiency, comfort, and convenience. It’s a privilege to take what’s already a great home and fine-tune it with the upgrades I know will make a difference.

Lighting Upgrades: Enhancing Our Home with Fan, Fixtures and Accent Lighting

Lighting plays a huge role in both function and ambiance, so I’m planning several upgrades to make our home more comfortable and inviting. We’ll be installing ceiling fans indoors and outdoors, adding statement fixtures in the dining room and foyer, and incorporating pendant lights over the kitchen island. To improve both task lighting and aesthetics, we’re also adding under-cabinet tape lighting in the kitchen. This is a great opportunity to consider lumens and color temperature ratings—key factors in choosing the right lighting for every space.

Smart Breakers for Energy Management

My home is equipped with a QO panel, and I plan to install smart breakers to take advantage of my utility’s time-of-use programs. With energy costs fluctuating throughout the day, smart breakers allow for better control over power consumption, ultimately saving money on my electric bill.

Landscape Lighting: Enhancing Beauty, Security, and Functionality

Landscape lighting does more than just improve a home’s appearance—it adds security, safety, and functionality to outdoor spaces. A well-planned lighting setup highlights architectural details, trees, pathways, and garden features, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. At the same time, it enhances security by eliminating dark spots, improving visibility, and deterring potential intruders. Beyond aesthetics and safety, it also extends the usability of outdoor areas, making patios, decks, and gardens more enjoyable after dark. From choosing the right fixtures to designing an effective layout, there are plenty of options to create a beautifully lit exterior.

Smart Water Leak Detection for Investment Protection

Water damage can be one of the most expensive home repairs, so I’m adding a smart water leak detection system. These devices alert homeowners at the first sign of a leak, giving me peace of mind and an extra layer of protection for my investment.

Home wiring is often done to meet code and save costs, but if I had full control over the build, there are things I would do differently. From dedicated circuits to better outlet placement, I’ll share what I would change based on my years of experience in the field.

Exploring Alarm.com for Smart Security

My new home includes a three-year subscription to Alarm.com, a platform I’ve worked with professionally. I’ll be sharing my thoughts on its features, its reliability, and how I plan to maximize my security system for automation and convenience.

Final Thoughts

These are just a few of the projects I’m planning once I move in. Over the next few months, I’ll be documenting the upgrades, sharing insights, and breaking down why these changes matter. Stay tuned for in-depth posts on each of these topics as I put my electrician’s expertise to work in my own home.
